Pattern play is a visual learning tool that combines drawing and music to create a unique collaborative experience that improves your audio awareness, teamwork skills and overall communication. The main goals of Pattern Play are to teach its users in a subconscious way whilst creating a multi-sensory experience for them to enjoy and be creative within.
The design behind Pattern Play takes inspiration from synthesis design, artwork that visualises audio and oscilloscope imagery.
Pattern play makes use of four different drawing patterns to produce four different sounds. Users can draw using the grid which quantises note pitch and timing meaning the audio produced will stay musical. Users can collaborate online with up to three other people and also save patterns they like to their account.
The final interface design was created with the target audience of children in mind, so I used simple controls mixed with bright colours and memorable graphics. Users can view the prompt for what type of sound they can to draw, pick their pattern and clear the grid at the bottom of the screen aswell as view how many people are drawing with them at the top of the screen.
Each pattern can be drawn into the grid and produces a different noise, the higher the pattern is drawn the higher the pitch of the notes that are played will be, when the user presses play the notes will sound as a sequence from left to right at a set tempo.
